In 2022 uncertainty took hold as inflation, volatile markets and a geopolitical conflict added to the challenges set in motion by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a world of shifting expectations and norms, we focused on creating a distinctive experience for our clients, consistent with the five-year strategy we launched in 2020. This North Star guided our global teams as they developed and executed innovative solutions on high-stakes deals, disputes and pro bono matters.
Our client work placed us at the center of global trends related to energy transition, environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, finance and globalization. We contributed to the dialogue on these issues with published insights including “Scaling up the energy transition,” a report based on a survey that explores how capital providers and companies are setting priorities, staying competitive and managing risk. Through our COP27 video series, we explored themes raised during the annual climate conference and their potential impact on business and industry.
In regions around the world, we increased our capacity to serve clients, promoting 59 new partners and welcoming 39 lateral partners. We developed new ways of working with clients, increasing efficiencies and ensuring consistency. These initiatives included our Debt Finance Solutions Team, which leverages legal technology and other resources to handle certain types of routine work, and our Client Experience Blueprints, a series of tools that codify our global best practices for working with clients before, during and after a matter.
We continued to focus on building a more diverse and inclusive workplace, significantly expanding our diversity data collection efforts so we can quantify our progress. Our people benefited from new and expanded coaching programs, and we took concrete steps to empower our associates, focusing on work allocation, skills development and leadership opportunities.
This review discusses these and other accomplishments and initiatives that made a difference to our people and our clients in 2022. Together we face the future positioned for success.

Affinity networks create and enhance awareness of these groups within the Firm and its larger culture, drive community and connection across our global offices, and support their members with career and professional development opportunities.

To support their professional development and promote retention, White & Case is investing in coaching programs for its non-partner lawyers and business services professionals in all its offices. While many law firms offer some form of coaching to lawyers, White & Case’s programs are unusual in both their scope and scale.
The Firm’s Coaching Office, which launched in 2020, expanded its coaching programs in 2022 to cover not only non-partner lawyers but also business services professionals and summer associates worldwide. Coaches provide single-session and longer-term coaching on key topics including career management and growth, performance feedback (how to act on it or how to provide it) and people management and team dynamics. Coaching industry survey data and research indicate that it is unusual for a law firm to offer formal coaching to business services professionals and to provide coaching worldwide.
The internal coaching faculty of nearly 20 professionals comprises coaches who have other business services roles in the Firm and either received a prior coaching certification or completed an in-house coach training program and academic requirements. Several of our coaches are also former practicing lawyers.
This ready access to and the widespread availability of these coaching programs have resulted in their robust use Firmwide. As of fall 2022, the Firm had provided coaching to 243 individuals from 31 of our 44 offices with a roughly equal number of lawyers and business services professionals accessing the programs.
The Firm’s Global Women’s Initiative launched its own coaching program in 2022 designed for our women associates, counsel and local partners. A total of 32 first- to third-year associates received group coaching on effective teamwork and collaboration; power, influence and presence; and stepping into challenges, while 126 senior associates, local partners and counsel applied for and received six hours of one-on-one coaching in areas they identified in their applications. Coaching topics that proved popular with applicants included overcoming impostor syndrome; gaining self-confidence and seeking feedback; personal branding internally and improving work/life balance; and setting boundaries in a global firm. In total, nearly 20 percent of the Firm’s women lawyers have received coaching.
