Overview

Christopher Flynn is a partner in the Mergers & Acquisitions practice group, based in Sydney.

Chris is an energy and infrastructure, and public international law specialist, and a trusted advisor to private and government clients internationally.

He advises domestic and international companies and governments on energy, resources and infrastructure transactions and projects, particularly in the upstream, LNG, renewable and non-renewable power sectors, as well as on public international law and energy security matters. He has advised in these areas in over 60 countries, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, Europe and in Africa.

Chris is one of only three lawyers in the Asia Pacific Region listed as a Leading Individual and Global Elite Thought Leader in Energy in Who's Who Legal for 2020, 2021 and 2022. He is listed as a Best Lawyer in the areas of Natural Resources Law and Oil & Gas Law in Best Lawyers Australia for 2022. EIG/MidOcean on its AUD 18.4 billion joint bid with Brookfield for Origin Energy Limited

EIG/MidOcean on its USD 2.2 billion acquisition of a portfolio of LNG assets from Tokyo Gas.

FRV on the sell-down of its Australian and New Zealand renewable energy business to Canadian pension fund OMERS, and the design and structuring of their related joint venture arrangements.

Qube Logistics in respect of its bulk storage and handling arrangements at the Port of Newcastle.

The State of Papua New Guinea and its national petroleum company, Kumul Petroleum, on negotiations with ExxonMobil (as operator) and its joint venture partners on the multibillion-dollar development of the P'nyang gas field, including a third train alongside the existing USD 19 billion PNG LNG project, and across from Total SA on the USD 15 billion Papua LNG Project.*

Jemena on several market-leading energy transition projects in Australia, including the Western Sydney Green Gas Project in New South Wales (one of Australia's first green hydrogen gas projects), the new gas lateral pipeline to connect to Australia's first LNG import terminal at Port Kembla, New South Wales, and the Malabar Biomethane Project in New South Wales (Australia's first biomethane-to-gas project).*

A short listed, final bidder on its bid to acquire Tilt Renewables, valued at approximately NZD 3 billion.*

CVC, the Carlyle Group and Neptune Energy on the Australian aspects of Neptune's USD 3.9 billion acquisition of Engie's global petroleum exploration and production business.*

A bidder on its 'first in market' innovative solutions to supply the South Australian and the New South Wales governments with 100% of its electricity supply requirements from a renewable portfolio.*

A South East Asian state in respect on certain maritime boundary delimitation matters with its neighbour, and related joint petroleum development matters.*

FRV on the structuring and development, and the subsequent sale, of its Royalla Solar Project, then the largest project of its kind in Australia.*

Chris also acts in complex and important pro bono.  His experience doing so includes:

Acting for Bernard Collaery, the former Attorney-General of the ACT and lawyer for Timor L'este, in relation to his criminal charges under the Intelligence Services Act 2001, along with partner Kate Harrison at Gilbert + Tobin. The case in the ACT Supreme Court involved important issues as to the application of Australia's national security laws. *

Acting for renowned journalist Peter Greste and his family in respect of his incarceration in an Egyptian gaol on 'terrorism' related charges during the Arab Spring, from which he was freed after 400 days.  This case involved important issues of public international law, press freedom and human rights. *

Assisting counsel retained to assist to resist the capital punishment of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran in Indonesia. *

Chris presents or lectures at, and has been asked to provide comment, on energy and energy security matters at leading international universities and conferences, and by international print and broadcast media internationally (including Bloomberg, Reuters, the AFR, the BBC World Service and Fairfax).
