Indonesia, known for its vibrant democracy, is set to embark on a defining moment that will determine the course of its governance. This electoral event carries immense significance, as it will determine the leadership that will guide the nation throughout the service period from 2024 to 2029.

Democracy in action: The direct election process

Indonesia's commitment to democratic values is exemplified through the direct election mechanism, where eligible citizens directly participate in selecting their representatives – rather than relying on an intermediary body or electoral college. This allows citizens to have direct impact on the composition of their government. Through their votes, Indonesians hold the key to determining the individuals who will assume the responsibilities of its governance in the imminent service period.

1. First Round Election

Determination of the Election Result
If no petition for dispute over the results of the election:
no later than 3 days after the General Election Commission (Komisi Pemilihan Umum or "KPU") receives notification letter from the Constitutional Court regarding the list of petitions for dispute over the results of the election

Determination of the elected:

  • President and Vice President, and
  • seats and candidates member of the House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat or "DPR"), Provincial Regional House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah or "DPRD Provinsi"), District/ City Regional House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah Kabupaten/ Kota or "DPRD Kabupaten/Kota") and Regional Representative Council (Dewan Perwakilan Daerah or "DPD")
If any petition for dispute over the results of the election:
no later than 3 days after the Constitutional Court's decision is read out Determination of the elected President and Vice President
no later than 3 days after the KPU determines the election results nationally after the Constitutional Court's decision Determination of the seats and candidates member of the DPR, DPRD Provinsi, DPRD Kabupaten/ Kota, DPD
