Global law firm White & Case LLP has expanded its Global Commercial Litigation Practice with the addition of Darryl Bernstein as a partner in Johannesburg.
"We have been looking to establish our litigation practice in Johannesburg for some time as we see significant synergies with other practices in the office, notably mergers and acquisitions and banking, and with other offices of the Firm, particularly London and Paris and our offices in Germany and the United States," said White & Case partner Glenn Kurtz, Head of the Global Commercial Litigation Practice. "Darryl's addition will also allow us to consolidate and further develop our relationships with global clients in these areas."
Darryl advises clients on cross-border and domestic litigation and arbitration proceedings, with a focus on shareholder disputes, financial restructuring and insolvency, banking and enforcement, as well as commercial disputes in the construction, technology and mining and metals sectors. He also advises on regulatory compliance matters and has acted for a wide range of international and domestic clients in investigations by the United States Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission and various other authorities and regulators. Darryl joins White & Case from Baker McKenzie, where he was a partner and head of the dispute resolution practice group in Johannesburg.
"Darryl is an experienced dispute resolution partner with a broad litigation and regulatory skill-set that complements and closely aligns with our EMEA disputes practice," said White & Case partner Markus Langen, Regional Section Head, EMEA Disputes 1.
Gary Felthun, White & Case Office Executive Partner in Johannesburg, said: "Darryl's addition and the launch of our commercial litigation practice in Johannesburg is an important step to expand and grow our offering in South Africa to best support our clients doing business here."
White & Case partner and Vice Chair Oliver Brettle said: "Dispute resolution has been identified as a strategic priority for the Firm and we continue to build on the existing strengths of our commercial litigation and arbitration practices. Darryl's addition and the establishment of our commercial litigation practice in Johannesburg follows the launch of our team in Madrid in October 2022 with the addition of partner Francisco Malaga from Linklaters."
